Apartheid South Africa

Arts is leftist sort of,…

Enterprise of Art, the vast spheres of what it is, business, education, galleries, etc.

Art structures for white and black artists like day and night, a lot for one and a ton for the other

Came into art world in Kindergarten in an art school run by three black school teachers

Taught him

Everything should have education…

Stepping stone to Modern culture, never mention about being visual…

You need to be visually literate

In most African cultures, the provincial government in Cape Town struck off visual education from primary school curriculum

Nobody has any knowledge of their original Art History…

Very little to go on

He wrote a history of South African Art in Context

Book: Visual Century: South African Art in Context Wrote in 1970’s

In ‘70’s what was said is that great art is what fermented political change…

One example was the very first exhibition, Every form of South African art had some political core it was thought…

It was something that he subscribed to then, that it was not just a tool for change but a tool for propaganda

Nonfigurative and abstract are was white…

Abstract art was seen as ways of dividing communities from public side…

Stereotypical practice…

James Joyce

New influences…, also lines of investigation that followed the ideas of

A South African Coloring Book

Set of prints

For Algeria

Its is Our Peoples

From Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Tamus Magic…

George Jackson

Killed in prison

No More

City Lake

Sueto

Art work led to South African banning the work of art he made… the artist became a man who with his art in your house, the police could arrest you for supporting communism… He said to his parents, “Please remove all the work from the wall.”

Nobody in the country knew that he existed…

Underground network kept him alive… consequences as doing something as an artist…

Living exile in South African, black artists were forming into partially illegal and full illegal cultural groups…

“Freedom Hunters”

Tananzanguan, calls for national conference of meeting on art, did not have kids…

https://africa.si.edu/exhibits/evidence/jantjes.html

Three day conference, one idea, what we do as artists when there no longer is a path/public

Subject put into new frame, what was the new frame?

He felt good, invited Tanzangua, came and when home…

Invaded his house and shot him, destroyed his studio, and …

This resulted in the small group of Dutch creating a foundation in Amsterdam…

http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/jantjes-dead-p78656/text-summary

He started painting…

School Days and Nights

Local artists were murkey in street committees

City of Johanesberg cancelled, he was work abroad

He decided to follow ideas to try to work with subject matter that was not apartheid

He addressed focus to African history and culture and painted in series…

Spread ideas across a set of pieces

Some kind of visual experience

Seven large canvases

The KORABARA (Control and come back) series?

History of slavery

Rid work of all text, remove titles, Farm

Poem The Arrivals?

6.5 hour poem recordings

Get away from overt political narrative with clear referent, they are poetic images…

You have to, threading of words, words on page…

Something merges…

Reflection or a count…

Poetic images

Half of the Sky

Take subject matter off sphere, into the night sky…

Came from doing research on Africa’s encounteral cosmology

Young girl takes handful of ashes from fire and creates…

The Zulu series, they are not people, Zulu call themselves the Amazulu

Zulu – space above your head…

All relate to the heavens, cosmology

Women hold up or sky… or half the heaven…

In their political struggle they had not empowered women, make work in honor of them…

Make map of the night sky, and gave constellations of names of women in the 150 year history of political struggle

In an attempt to remove text from image yet still generate a discourse, deeply involved in

Involved in the appropriation of Africa’s creativity by European Modernists, MOMA, …

French…

Shaping diversity, acknowledgement of others in the world are just as creative as yourself, even thought they might not have the facilities to make such objects…

Became subject for all his future research…

Led him to teach and write about it…

National policy for arts council…

He finally left the studio and decided to do something that…

Directing, center in Oslo, showing artist such as…

Gordon Bennet

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Goldblatt

Groups of artists from former Soviet Union

India,

To what extend did Soviet Union play in South African apartheid struggle…

Wrote, directed, and curated, …

He decided to do something for himself

To come back into the art world …

He returned to the studio

He could not simply start…

Too many years had passed, too many debates, too much had been written,…

Actual experience had changed…

Work across the world, had seen many more things…

Decided to make series of paintings

Exagenic series

Similar sized paintings

Pink, white, …

Exagenic

On the surface of the earth

What is the most abundant thing on earth, water, only 1/10 we make use of…

Water is of course a commodity that is becoming rarer, and rarer…

Water war being fought in Africa…

Investigate what is possible in painting without

Use eyes to stimulate the imagination

Disatistfaction with Museum instiutions and lack of showing paintings

The gallery has become a cinema, discussion group, etc. but no paintings…

All great collections are paintings and drawings…

No drawing exhibition for seven years…

Arrogance of high Modernism, and theories of High Modernist critics and who boast about abstract

Fearful of touching painting medium because it has to do with thing we don’t want to talk about

Who writesa letter if everything is in digital fonts?

What is still possible in the field of painting, that we have somehow

Don’t want to go to the field of extended field painting, in which we apply it to sculpture

Trying to look at very old fashion position of what is still possible with painting?

Wrote essay, “Paint in the Face of Doubt”

Fears that are totally unreal…

Touching things and values that somehow we could not complete with highly active recording that photography or more technical stuff can do.

Painting is slow, cannot be done in real time

So it SLOWS YOU DOWN AND TO THINK AND USE YOUR IMAGINATION

Think Mindfulness coloring books without the use of text

In post-modern discourse, the craft and skill of words and recording of facts supersedes craft and skill of something out of nothing…

The magical thing that has driven the arts for centuries…

People have seen drawing without seeing real object

We have lost the ability to really see real things…

The most radical things is to say this is how I want to work…

I want to work from out of under the shadow of doubt that covers the act of painting, to learn from the vast history that painting that gives us,

Spent this morning in museum, best physical space for museum in planet

Go back there…

Designed from his friend in Oslo

But did not invite him…

Alexandria in Egypt, library, best of world…

Think about experience of going into gallery and standing in from of object and let it do something to you…

What are you doing hang exhibitions in your yard…

I think that as painting the most valuable thing to get facts…

Confront really sharp curatorships, that rely on precise theoretical position and ideas that start off with idea and land in work…

Invert process and let work reveal…

I asked about the idea that the Standing Rock School is trying to do language restoration:

He said, “What do you mean about language? Is it spoken language? …or is it visual language? Is it body language? In the age of Google, etc. you have every fact, but can you get in the head of a Shaman? The artist’s job is to give the viewer a picture of the inside of the head of a Shaman. In African, the sky is huge, dark and big. The Zulu mean people from:

Came from doing research on Africa’s encounteral cosmology

Young girl takes handful of ashes from fire and creates…

The Zulu series, they are not people, Zulu call themselves the Amazulu

Zulu – space above your head…

All relate to the heavens, cosmology

Women hold up or sky… or half the heaven…

So, the looking up at space influenced cosmology, Egypt…

About kayaerbil

I am a Berkeley educated chemistry Ph.D. who is moving into the area of working on developing appropriate technology for communities that are subjected to socio-economic oppression. The goal is to use simple and effective designs to empower people to live better lives. Currently, I am working with Native Americans on Pine Ridge, the Lakota reservation in South Dakota. I am working with a Native owned and run solar energy company. We are currently working on building a compressed earth block (CEB) house that showcases many of the technologies that the company has developed. The CEB house is made of locally derived resources, earth from the reservation. The blocks are naturally thermally insulating, keeping the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Eventually, a solar air heater and photovoltaic panels will be installed into the house to power the home and keep it warm, while preserving the house off the grid. A side project while in Pine Ridge is a solar computer. I hope to learn about blockchain encryption software for building microgrids. In addition, it is an immediate interest of mine to involve local youth in technology education.
