Thoreau Your Life Away

I went to some friends’ house last night who have an unpublished book called, “How to Start a Fire.” I told them that I wanted to share their text up the AT in the trail logs. The offered me some secret medicine and gave me $40 to REI. I heard beautiful stories of healing in community and was able to connect with the community in the house about reforms that I care about. I shared my blog with them and offered to write with them new material. Ended up crashing on a bed for a couple hours. Woke up around 5 am to use the restroom and ended up sitting on a couch with a cat and a zine called “What is a Destituent Power?” by Giorgio Agamben. Looked out at the Midtown area and thought about where Occupy Atlanta went wrong. The house I am in is the most beautiful product of that rare time. An oasis in the city of Atlanta. This cat right here is so peaceful. He has got little retracted claws and teeth. He is a predator. He lives off the kindness and love of others. Freely giving, freely receiving. Always in balance. Facebook for me gives me that balance. It gives me a voice and a digital commune. I pray that fire can be used during my hike as a tool for healing. Alcohol fire is beautiful. Clean, natural energy. Light and easily attainable on the AT. Learning how to use fire to melt ice is the most essential skill for this next six months. Ice that freezes my body, mind, and spirit into rigid and conditioned structures. The next six months will melt fat off my body and carve my flesh back towards the ripped 180 lb. Rock and Ice climbing machine that I am going to become. I want to summit peaks in the Mountains of the world and climb rock with the best of them. I want to get back into world class Mountaineering shape. I will get back into this form mentally, physically, and spiritually on the AT. A return to the Wilds for me. Climbing under moon light is how I want to live and breath. Under the Sun and Moon my Spirit will be in union with God.

About kayaerbil

I am a Berkeley educated chemistry Ph.D. who is moving into the area of working on developing appropriate technology for communities that are subjected to socio-economic oppression. The goal is to use simple and effective designs to empower people to live better lives. Currently, I am working with Native Americans on Pine Ridge, the Lakota reservation in South Dakota. I am working with a Native owned and run solar energy company. We are currently working on building a compressed earth block (CEB) house that showcases many of the technologies that the company has developed. The CEB house is made of locally derived resources, earth from the reservation. The blocks are naturally thermally insulating, keeping the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Eventually, a solar air heater and photovoltaic panels will be installed into the house to power the home and keep it warm, while preserving the house off the grid. A side project while in Pine Ridge is a solar computer. I hope to learn about blockchain encryption software for building microgrids. In addition, it is an immediate interest of mine to involve local youth in technology education.
