We need to build education in the global refugee population.  Who wants to help?

You can help, I need to find people to help our work.  See my Craigslist ad and apply:

Idealistic Web Developer Needed for Refugee Education Website (Atlanta)

I am starting work on a massive open online course for use in the refugee population and need to find an idealistic web developer that would like to help with development of a website for the project. I am working on generating content for the site. If you join you will be serving a high need population and will have the opportunity to cooperate with nonprofit work to establish a base of experience in that sector.

I am a UC Berkeley (Ph.D. chemistry, 2009) and Emory University (B.S. chemistry, 2003) graduate who has spent a year studying Christian theology at Princeton Theological Seminary that seeks to offer my services the Atlanta, domestic, and international refugee community via the web. I am currently working with AmeriCorps with the Notre Dame Mission Volunteers program in high school education and work with refugee adults and high school age youth. I tutor high school age youth in all high school subjects and adults in English. I am extremely experienced in working with all types of learners and feel compassion and patience is of the highest value in education. I strive to incorporate these traits in every tutoring session. I have extensive experience in education having tutored in all high school subjects, computer programming, biochemistry, organic chemistry, college math up to differential equations, and writing in the past. Learning WordPress to develop the dream of mine, the STEAM-ESL GED MOOC (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, English as a Second Language, General Education Development, Massive Open Online Course) for use in the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) work with refugees first domestically and then hopefully internationally with the LearnDash WordPress plugin. Imagine a website that could be used in refugee reeducation to adapt to the American system of education. Before a refugee is resettled or immediately after they have been resettled the website will be used to educate him or her to pass the GED on the first time. A significant challenge will be mastering the challenging language barrier to taking a hard high school equivalency test with little English experience. Thus, the website will teach English to the level of the GED. I am working on this project with the IRC education workers in the Atlanta office. I hope to also work on this project with the Impacting Metro Atlanta Science Teaching (IMAST) group at Georgia State University when I work on my Master’s of Art in Teaching degree starting this summer. I hope to continue to contribute significantly to the IRC’s mission during that time and see and way to also expand into urban schools with significant migrant populations. For example, the website could significantly help Latino migrant workers from Mexico, Central, and South America that come to the United States for a better life. If I do this well, I get a job at a place like Khan Academy or get to where I could start a nonprofit of my own and hire people to work with me. Ambitious, but worth it.

The Sage sees the world
as an expansion of her own self
So what need has she to accumulate things?
By giving to others
She gains more and more
By serving others
She receives everything.

About kayaerbil

I am a Berkeley educated chemistry Ph.D. who is moving into the area of working on developing appropriate technology for communities that are subjected to socio-economic oppression. The goal is to use simple and effective designs to empower people to live better lives. Currently, I am working with Native Americans on Pine Ridge, the Lakota reservation in South Dakota. I am working with a Native owned and run solar energy company. We are currently working on building a compressed earth block (CEB) house that showcases many of the technologies that the company has developed. The CEB house is made of locally derived resources, earth from the reservation. The blocks are naturally thermally insulating, keeping the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Eventually, a solar air heater and photovoltaic panels will be installed into the house to power the home and keep it warm, while preserving the house off the grid. A side project while in Pine Ridge is a solar computer. I hope to learn about blockchain encryption software for building microgrids. In addition, it is an immediate interest of mine to involve local youth in technology education.
